We don't do windows

On visiting the Java download website they gave some complicated instructions on how to install the JRE. After going through the steps explained it ended up not working anyway as Firefox still did not have the JRE available . I was desperatly looking for a solution when I gave the Ubuntu software installer from the application menu. There it was the Java JRE but it had no install button. This was cured by navigating to the edit menu and at the bottom selecting software sources, and on the Ubuntu tab clicking all the check boxes. Now I returned to the selection and let the install begin. In now time at all it installed and Firefox now have the JRE available.

open gedit at root level: gksu gedit good for editing protected files

Blue sreen of death

Jan-21-2011 By admin

Well it had happen a again this year. I got the blue screen of death and I could not boot to anything. I had to reinstall windows again, fifth time on that box. I had a dual boot windows Ubuntu but this time it is only going to have windows XP on it as I am tired of reinstalling both I really only run two programs on it so there is a big waist of hard drive (250Gb). I installed my Office 2003 and some others on it so I wouldn’t feel it was such a waist, but I really never use them. I have been using Open office on my Linux and only miss on feature the change to sentence case. They have a change to lower case but the Microsoft capitalizes the first letter of each sentence. I am going to suggest it as a feature to to Oracle. I really only use a word processor because I can’t spell very well.

New years resolutions

I resolve to pay more attention to my blogs.
Everyone I have converted to Ubuntu Linux has stayed with it except for one, my wife. She likes something she is familiar with resisting change. She has dual boot and seems to choose windows most of the time. I don’t have a problem with this but I’m the one she calls every time it messes up. I keep reminding her she would not have this problem with Linux but for now she remains unflappable. The funny thing is, she is selling all our old computers and putting Ubuntu Linux on them. It figures because with Windows XP and up you have to have an activation code or the operating system becomes useless after 30 days. I hope windows keeps things this way so people look for a solution. Bill Gates I rich enough. You would think he would have the windows operating system free to insure its popularity. Competing systems do not spend as much or any money advertising like Windows yet people still are changing from windows to Apple or Linux.

Linux and windows all the way

When I first started using Ubuntu Linux I had used the GRUB boot loader to dual boot both operating systems. This never worked out to well for me. Every time I got the windows blue screen of death my boot loader got messed up and I could not boot to anything. I really liked the Linux but there was two programs I had that would only run in windows. Lisa came up with a solution. She got me a good used computer that I could put windows on. So now I have two computers at my desk, One for Linux and one for windows. I got a inexpensive switch at Newegg to network them both. This works better than a router behind router. She also traded desks with me so I could fit both screens on the desk. I call the windows computer answering machine because all I use it for is my Skype phone and my Livezilla live help chat. you can get Skype for Linux, but the USB phone I am using only works with a windows program. I got the source code for the USB phone so if I ever learn to program maybe I could have only one application for windows. I use my linux machine to do all my work on because it never gets the blue screen of death, crashing for me. I stopped using frontpage and started using KmopoZer and so far it is working out.

In my change over for web host provider I never got the backup for the MySQL database. This is another reason I changed hosts. The articles were about Linux vs windows and had some great content, but that is all history now. I run two computers at my desk. My main computer runs Ubuntu Linux and an older computer runs windows XP named answering machine. You might guess what I use it for from the name. I only run two programs on it, Skype and Livezilla. It regularly gets the blue screen on death and has to be reinstalled many times. I have only had one failure with Linux and that was because of a power failure during an update to critical files. Being a cheap bastard I did not opt for paid support, so I depend on the forums for help and after a bit always find an answer. I have a free virus scan from Bitdefender but I don’t ever need it. I run it once in a while to keep viruses off my network. The really great thing about Linux is it is tremendously more reliable then any windows I have ever had. I started with windows 3 back in the 90′s. You can’t beat the price of Linux, its free and so is most all of the software I use on it.
